Program Overview

What Is Structured Literacy with E.A.S.E?

Rooted in the Science of Reading, this foundational reading program provides a clear roadmap to confidently implement practices that align with how the brain learns to read. It addresses all strands of Scarborough's Reading Rope and includes differentiated supports.

Building Confident, Skilled Readers

After implementing this program, your students will have the skills they need to become proficient readers. They'll strengthen both their word recognition and language comprehension abilities, mastering key skills such as phonemic awareness, decoding, sight recognition, background knowledge, vocabulary, language structures, verbal reasoning, and literacy knowledge.

Phonemic Awareness
Students will practice identifying, hearing, and manipulating individual sounds in spoken words—a critical skill for reading and spelling.
Decoding Strategies
Students engage in various exercises to encourage orthographic mapping as they learn to apply their knowledge of letter-sound relationships to become more confident readers.
Sight Recognition
Students practice at the grapheme, word, sentence, and text levels as they build their fluency with new letter-sound relationships. This promotes fluency while helping students commit letter-sound relationships to memory.
Background Knowledge
Students will activate and build their background knowledge through pre-reading discussions that help them connect to the topic and better understand what they are about to read.
Vocabulary
Students will discuss and learn key vocabulary words, including decodable terms found in the text and non-decodable words that represent important themes or key ideas, helping to build their understanding of more challenging vocabulary.
Language Structures
Students will receive explicit instruction in syntax and semantics to deepen their understanding of sentence structure and word meaning, helping them comprehend complex language in the text more effectively.
Verbal Reasoning
Students will be asked questions that require them to infer, synthesize information, and articulate their reasoning aloud, strengthening their verbal reasoning and critical thinking skills.
Literacy Knowledge
Students will develop their literacy knowledge by exploring concepts such as print awareness, text structure, genres, and the conventions of written language to support their overall reading comprehension.

Sequences for Structured Literacy

Our program is organized into sequences that provide a clear, step-by-step roadmap for instruction. This allows you to meet the individual needs of every reader, no matter their grade level.

Sound Sequence
This sequence lays the groundwork by introducing basic consonant and short vowel sounds, along with proper letter formation. It also introduces the first 13 essential high-frequency words students need to know.
Sequence One
In this sequence, students will get extended practice with the closed syllable type. They will also begin reading a full text with each new skill.
Sequence Two
In this sequence, students will learn about digraphs, blends, and the "magic e" syllable type.
Sequence Three
In this sequence, students will learn about vowel teams and r-controlled vowels, as well as suffixes and some suffix spelling rules.
Sequence Four
In this sequence, students will learn about the open vowel in multisyllabic words, diphthongs, the final stable syllable, suffixes, and prefixes.
Supplemental Sequence (Digital Only)
This digital-only sequence provides a library of mini-lessons for less common skills. It’s perfect for supplementing your core instruction and meeting specific student needs.

FAQs

What makes this program different from others that are aligned with the Science of Reading?

Structured Literacy with E.A.S.E. is a robust, foundational reading program that teaches critical phonics skills, spelling rules, syllable types, syllable division rules, prefixes, and suffixes. It is aligned to all strands of Scarborough's Reading Rope, ensuring students not only learn how to read words but also how to understand what they are reading.

The program incorporates phonological awareness, word mapping of skill words and high-frequency words, word chaining, and more. It also uses a scaffolded approach to reading in which students first practice reading individual phonemes, then move into reading phrases and sentences, and finally to reading complete books.

In addition to focusing on technical reading skills, the program encourages critical thinking and reading, with each lesson including vocabulary development and a focus on comprehension skills and strategies.

I teach [kindergarten, first grade, second grade, and so on]. What sequence should I start with?

The six sequences in this program progress from simpler skills to more complex skills and are intended to be taught over the course of several years. The sequences are not tied to a specific grade level. The goal of this program is to provide an explicit scope and sequence for students to follow as they progress through the skills needed to be effective readers.

I am just getting started with SOR/SL. What kind of training does the program provide so I know I’m doing it right?

We are committed to ensuring that you and your students have success with this program. Every activity in the program comes with a written explanation and a step-by-step guide, and there are video demonstrations of the skills and activities in practice.

The program was written to accommodate teachers who are brand new to the Science of Reading, so all activities are well explained. Furthermore, training videos are regularly released to address topics ranging from specific activity implementation to the broader pedagogy surrounding the Science of Reading. We’ve got your back every step of the way.
